Everything you need to know about metal buildings with living quarters in Texas
Texas is a big state, and there’s plenty of room for metal buildings with living quarters. If you’re looking for a new place to call home or need more space for your business, metal buildings are the obvious choice. They’re strong, durable, and can be customized to fit your needs. This blog post will tell you everything you need to know about metal buildings with living quarters, known as “barndominiums”.
These days metal buildings are becoming more and more popular in Texas. The reason for this is that they’re so versatile. You can use them for storage, workshops, commercial and agricultural uses, and, increasingly, living quarters. In addition, metal buildings can be customized to any size or specification you need and have the most durable and long-lasting material properties for building construction.
A Metal Home or Barndominium?
Why not? If you’re looking for a durable, long-lasting, and low-maintenance home, metal is the way. In addition, metal buildings are energy-efficient and can be customized to fit your needs. So if you’re thinking about building a new home in Texas, consider a metal building. You won’t regret it!
There are many advantages metal has over concrete or wood for framing your building’s living quarters. You might encounter several issues in modifying your structure if it’s made from traditional materials, but metal requires less effort for any modification. In addition, metal is superior because it usually needs significantly less maintenance, has energy-efficient properties, and remains excellent in resisting all weather conditions.
Metal is also the most sustainable framing material available. It can be recycled and reused infinite times without losing its strength or durability. So when your roofing or building needs repairs after the better part of a century, it can be recycled and turned into new panels.
Another advantage to steel buildings is that the steel itself acts as a natural fire retardant. So in the event of a wildfire, your steel-framed home has a much better chance of surviving.
Planning Your Structure
Planning is by far the easiest step in this entire process! We’ve built many bardominium steel buildings in and around North Texas and West Texas. By far, the two most popular styles of floorplans from our clients are:
- The shop-style barndominuim.
- The homestead-style barndominuim.
Metal Shop with Living Quarters
The shop barndominium is like it sounds, a large warehouse-style building with plenty of room for all your equipment. Your RV, camper, boat, vehicles, etc., all occupy the shop portion of the barndominium inside the steel building while having direct access to the living quarters. The living quarters inside the building are usually framed up just like an ordinary house. But in the case of a shop-style barndominium, it’s practically a house inside of another building, which is usually great for saving you money on heating and cooling.
In our experience, common sizes for the shop style barndominium are:
- 40 x 60 x 12 (feet)
- 60 x 60 x 20 (feet)
- 50 x 100 x 20 (feet)
The homestead-style barndominium is great for those who want the exterior of their home to look a little more traditional. It’s similar to the shop barndominium, but typically has less interior shop space. In our experience, common sizes for the homestead style barndominium are:
- 40 x 60 x 12 (feet)
- 30 x 60 x 12 (feet)
- 30 x 40 x 12 (feet)
Customers who want to build these homestead-style barndominiums have us build covered overhangs and large porches to optimize indoor-outdoor living spaces.
Planning Out Your Floorplan for a Texas Barndominium
When planning your barndominium, it’s essential to think about how you’ll use the space. For example, do you need a lot of storage for your tools and equipment? Or are you looking for a cozy home with a few bedrooms and bathrooms? Both? Once you know how to use the space, you can start looking at the floor plan.
There are many high-quality and free floorplans widely available online. Many of them include all the details needed for your forever home barndominium, including the placement of windows, doors, skylights, and overhead doors. Do you want the living space to be multi-story? The sky is the limit for what you can do with the interior of a barndominium style home. Still, you should always ensure your ideas follow your local building code and are formally approved by an engineer. If this is a concern for you, we have many prefab options that structural engineers have approved. These prefab options include open living spaces, so you can design the interior to suit your needs without the concern of interior load-bearing walls. Please check your local building ordinances before ordering. Also, check out our blog posts if you want to do additional research before you buy.
